Ten Things of Thankful – 2/09/18

Ten Things of Thankful

Tomorrow Papa Bear and I are heading out of town for an overnight at a nearby city, a birthday/valentine get away that is relaxing for us both and involves crab legs, my favorite! 🙂 So, I thought I’d get my TToT post written and linked up on a Friday for a change. 🙂  Usually Friday is a quiet day at the TToT, so I was happy to see Missy already there and waiting for us to join her! 🙂

I am not a big sports fan, but I make an effort to stay somewhat aware of what’s happening with Papa Bear’s favorite teams (all teams Texas of course), and my son’s (who’s been cheering for Boston teams since he was two years old.) You might find it rather strange then, that my first thankful this week is that the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl.  It was an interesting match up since my son cheers for the Patriots, and his father was born and raised in Philly and is of course Phildelphia loyal.  I was thankful the Philly’s won because my ex has waited his entire life for his team to win a super bowl and he is sixty-nine years old!  I was very proud of my gracious son who texted that it was ok if the Philly’s beat his beloved Patriots because they played better and deserved the win.  I am thankful for my son’s maturity and always gracious heart.  I am also thankful that over the years I have learned to be happy for someone when good things happen to them, even if I’m not particularly crazy about the person.  I know that my ex’s  team winning made his day.

I am thankful for the photo updates I received of both my kids this week.  Getting pictures from them can be like pulling teeth!  My son shared a really cute one of him, his girlfriend and her son in their Patriots t-shirts ready to watch the game, and my son-in-law sent a beautiful one of my daughter that he took while they were dining out at their favorite place.  I have awesome kids, and they have awesome partners, I blessed and I am so thankful for all of them!

I was thankful, and very relieved, this week when our monthly electric bill arrived and had returned to the normal amount.  We live in an all electric home, and last month our electricity provider began using a different utility source which resulted in an electric bill twice our normal rate, “due to the change over”.  We were not happy, it was a big chunk of money we didn’t have laying around, but they assured us it was a one time thing and this month would return to normal (we use an averaged payment plan which stays the same all year long).  We were worried that the higher rate would be the new norm, and weren’t sure how we were going to afford that.  It was a tremendous relief to see it back to the right amount!  I still think the whole switchover excuse for the double amount last month was kinda crappy and not really justifiable though. Oh well.

On much happier notes, I celebrated my sixty-forth birthday this week, a low-key day by choice. I am thankful I am alive and well, and God has brought me safely through another year.  I always celebrate birthday, I think everyone should, I’ve earned every candle and gray hair and I am proud of them.  I am a survivor!

I am thankful that Papa Bear surprised me and took Wednesday off work to spend the day at home with me so I wouldn’t be alone.  That was extra nice! ❤  He is thankful that we will be the same age for the next four months (until he turns sixty-five in June), so I can’t call him “old man” for the time being. :-))

I am thankful for the many birthday greetings I received on Facebook and in the mail. Facebook makes birthdays so fun! I am thankful for the awesome gifts I received from family and friends, I felt very spoiled. ❤

I am thankful for the beautiful birthday cake my daughter ordered from our best bakery here and had me pick it up. It was/is delicious!!  We indulged in a sugar overload and have several pieces wrapped and in the freezer for treats later on (though I doubt they’ll be there too long). Papa Bear loves sweets as much as I do and this was a real treat, and such a kind thing to do.  I also got restaurant gift cards for nice dinners out.  My kids are the best!

I am thankful for the Amazon boxes that my furkids love to play and nap in. They get so excited when a package arrives at the house, and each one has to try out the box, sometimes waiting their turn patiently and sometimes not so much. 🙂  Sometimes our house is an obstacle course of boxes, kitty trees and tunnels and toys.  I am certain that my father is grumbling about it in Heaven. 🙂

I am thankful for a two hour phone visit with my younger sister yesterday.  I am not a phone visitor, so we visit daily via text or Messenger, but only connect by phone once a month or so to catch up on the longer stories in our lives.  The afternoon passed quickly and it was fun to catch up.  We are so different and yet the caring between us is strong, and we grow more in the understanding of each other as the years go by.

Last but not least, I am thankful for friends who trust me with the important issues and concerns in their lives, just as I trust them.  That kind of support is immeasurable. When you have lived much of your life without any close friends, having them is a real gift.

Blessings to  each of you in the days ahead… Look for reasons to be thankful in your life, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

I am an Aquarian by birth, and although I am past sixty and slightly frayed around the edges, my fascination with this thing called life continues. Faith, family, and friends are important to me; so are honesty, trust, tolerance, compassion and kindness. 1. Happy Belated Birthday! That is sweet that Papa Bear took the day off to be with you. Great thankfuls. Your son has great taste in sports teams 🙂 I live in Mass. so of course I have to root for The Patriots and Red Sox ( and Bruins and Celtics). I hope you have a wonderful getaway. XO

  2. I am no sport fan, not really so loyal to any team in my general vicinity. I don’t always get it, but I did fall into the fever when the Toronto baseball team was close to the championship a few years back.

My ex loved Boston and I dislike football more than baseball for sure.

I think it is good another team got to win for once though. I love that story between your son and his father. Sweet.

What kind of cake was it? I love sweets too. I am eating my birthday chocolate today to celebrate. I am glad chocolate isn’t the cause of my headaches.

Enjoy your night away. Sounds like fun.

  3. Such a nice list, and great you are able to get away this weekend. I’m sure you are going to enjoy the crab legs. I like crab, but not having to pick the crab out of the shell.
I can’t imagine having an electric bill twice what it normal was. What a shock that would be. I’m so glad it is back to normal.
Your birthday cake was so beautiful!
I’m picturing all those boxes and how much your cats are enjoying them.
Enjoy your time away with your Valentine.

  4. Happy Birthday.
Appreciation (and the implied trust of people who confide in you) is always a good, if not low-key pleasure. It seems so simple, but then there seems to be an increasing shortage of people willing to simply listen, while theres never a shortage of those who just want to tell you what you did wrong.
Funny about the sports thing. I don’t follow the major sports (yeah, I know, what a surprise) but do enjoy watching golf. (We actually watch the LPGA when it’s on, in part due to my Y Chromian heritage but largely because they’re all very good golfers. The galleries are so different from the PGA mainstream. At least there’s no one screaming ‘Get in the hole’ every time someone putts. And on everyday except the final day of the tournament, theres like six people (family members no doubt lol following the players.
And, probably for reasons apparent to everyone but me, I totally enjoy listening to the local college baseball games… on the radio! lol Theres something about the ‘non-professional’ (in a good way) manner of the announcers (college students) that just makes it fun.
    Have a good road trip.

  5. I hope you had a wonderful getaway weekend. What a lovely surprise! And surely, a bonus to have Papa Bear take your birthday off from work and spend it with you. Nice 🙂
Speaking of! The cake! From the picture you posted on FB, it looked delicious indeed.Kudos for you for actually having leftovers to put in the freezer. That would not be me lol I’m with you Wendy about celebrating birthdays (even when the day may not be a good one). We should celebrate our own selves even if no one else does 🙂
I’m happy for you that you have a growing understanding of your sister and she with you. You have mentioned in the past, “struggles” and I know I can relate to that with my own sister. Staying in touch even once a month by phone surpasses a texting relationship as we all need that direct voice connections sometimes. Too often the texted word conversation gets misinterpreted and surely subject to one’s mood at the moment it’s read.
True friendship is a gift and you know it by its reciprocity.
    Have a very excellent week!!!

  6. I hope you enjoyed your mini-vacation, I can’t wait to hear about it. It’s nice to have a week that is extra special and and makes things like electric bills pale in the happiness of the other things – birthday cake, photos, phone calls and gestures of love and appreciation.

  7. Thank you for checking in on my comment issue! I have been home so little lately that I had forgotten it. Then it was days before I was home long enough to work on it even after you reminded me. I think I am good to go now.
I turned 57 on Th. Happy birthday to you! This is a nice time for a birthday as far as I am concerned. And now you are on to a Valentine’s celebration!? That sounds so fun. I don’t remember the last time we paused to take time for a Valentine, but it sounds pretty wonderful! I hope your get away was refreshing.

  8. Happy birthday! I hope you had a wonderful getaway–and thanks for taking the time to resend the code. I didn’t mean to disturb your vacation! 🙂

  9. I didn’t care much about the Super Bowl this year, other than hoping the Pats lost (yay). I didn’t watch a minute of it, even for the commercials. Had the Chiefs been in it, I would have watched….
We have gas heat, but I’m glad I’m not the one who pays the bills in our household, after all the cold weather we’ve had!
Birthdays ARE better with Facebook! So nice to get birthday greetings from far and wide! And I’m with you – I have earned every wrinkle and line and gray hair that I hide because I’m vain and not ready to face yet….
I love a kitty in a box! Fletcher was my box kitty; Pete and Nora are not. They are sprawl on the bed kitties!
