Ten Things of Thankful ~ 1/16/18

Here we are, already two weeks into the new year, and I wonder why time seems to go by so much faster as I get older.  Today is my big  sister’s 66th birthday, that seems impossible!  We were talking about how special my mom always made us feel on our birthdays, with crepe paper streamers and balloons, a few wrapped presents, and wonderful decorated cakes. We didn’t realize then how much we would treasure those homespun memories later in life.  I am thankful for the relative innocence of my childhood.

I am both amazed and thankful that I have somehow managed to lose 35 pounds since I quit working at the law firm with no intentional effort on my part. I did a lot of stress snacking back then, and often ate fast food lunches, so while I can’t say that lead a healthy lifestyle now with the right foods and exercise, I can say that I’m doing better.

January 2nd marked the 10th anniversary of my meeting Papa Bear on the Internet at the Yahoo Personals site (which is no longer in existence). People can say what they want about the risks and crazies involved with online dating sites, but I know of several people like me who have found the perfect for them partner that way. I am so thankful for the gift of Papa Bear in my life, it has totally changed me, it has changed everything!

The first week of the month brought the opportunity to take the two feral tomcats I’ve been feeding since last June to the vet clinic for neutering.  They both did well and recovered quickly, will now live much safer and healthier and happier lives, and won’t be adding to the rural cat population. I am thankful I was finally able to locate a low-cost spay/neuter clinic which made it possible for me to do this.

Smoky, one of the two feral boys is very special. I cannot explain it, but he was always very insecure outside, and loves being in the house.  He behaves perfectly, gets along well with our other four cats, and is just a big mushy teddy bear who loves to snuggle and sleep on our laps!  Both Papa Bear and I are amazed at how well he has adapted, and how peaceful and content he is.  Truly the sweetest boy, with thick blue/gray fur coat that feels like rabbit fur.  I am thankful that he and Toby have become good friends in the house, often playing together, both of them needed a buddy, since the three girls are older and not so delighted with games of pounce and chase. 🙂 He is happy to be an official insider.

Andy, the other feral boy is also completely tame now, but loves his outside life, so he shall remain there. He gets to come inside to stay in the guest room on cold nights, and he is a very well-behaved visitor. I am thankful we can provide love, care, good food, and warmth for him too. He is so cute popping up in the deck window to greet us, visit with the inside cats, or request supper!

This month marked my 9th year on Facebook, and I am thankful for all the wonderful connections with family and friends I have there.  I have reconnected with cousins, former classmates, and friends from all stages of my life, along with making many new friends via blogging, etc.  While Facebook can be frustrating at times, and is too often a means for people to promote political agendas, negativity and drama, it can also be used for the opposite, to promote love and light and strong relationships, and to present prayer requests. We CAN use it to encourage each other!  I am thankful for all the wonderful opportunities it provides.

Speaking of prayer requests, I am a great believer in the power of prayer, and the power of people joining together to pray for specific needs.  I could easily make a whole Ten Things of Thankful list each week of prayers answered, but the highlights of this week include a runaway found and returned safely home, animals rescued from the cold/starvation/neglect and abuse, the safe delivery of a high-risk baby, urgent financial needs met, and broken spirits starting to mend.  I am thankful I can offer up my prayers and know that they join those of others in reaching the ears of our loving Father.

I am thankful for the beautiful “supermoon” we were blessed to begin the New Year with! The moon is such a powerful symbol of the things that connect us all, and as we witnessed that beautiful bright sky we know the others we love were sharing it with us. I am also thankful that each evening now provides us with a few more minutes of daylight and I love moving slowly out of winter darkness.  With more light comes more energy and renewal.

Finally, I am thankful for my new blogging space here, and for the perfect picture popping up in my photo files to use for the header.  Sophie really does appear to be checking out what I have written.  🙂 Once I set my mind to it the transition is going better than expected.  I will eventually be archiving and printing hard copies of my old blogs.

I would also like to apologize for my absence over the past weeks/months. I feel very sad about not getting around to read and comment, and I resolve to get back on track with that beginning today!  The dark clouds of December and early January have passed and I am ready to rejoin you in the light. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding.

Blessings to  each of you in the days and weeks ahead… Look for reasons to be thankful in your life, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

I've been blogging off and on since August of 2006. I adopted the pen name Josie Two Shoes in 2007 as I began a new chapter of my life standing on my own two feet. Now I'm married to the man of my dreams; we live in dusty West Texas with a house full of furkids. I am an Aquarian by birth, and although I am past sixty and slightly frayed around the edges, my fascination with this thing called life continues. Faith, family, and friends are important to me; so are honesty, trust, tolerance, compassion and kindness. I'm pretty up front about most things, so if you want to know something more about me, just ask! :-) You can also reach me by email and find me at my Facebook page.

  1. First of all, I love your new site! Very beautiful and professional looking.

It has been a long time since I have thought about crepe paper streamers, which were once almost a necessity of any party.

I also lost weight after retiring, but you did amazing! There was almost always some food left over from meetings they had. Office staff frequently became part of the clean up crew.

Does the neutering make the tom cats more docile? I know those surgical procedures make bull more docile.

This last week was quite the week for you. Glad things turned out good in the end.

    1. Thank you Pat! That’s true about crepe paper streamers. I still love them!

There really is a lit of snacking in offices, and lots of treats. We used to have Pizza Hut deliver a box of their warm brownies! I eat very small lunches now, it helps.

Neutering cats stops agressive, territorial behaviors like fighting and marking. Smoky is about as docile as they come anyway, but it also helps prevent some cancers, and more homeless kittys!

First couple weeks of January are never my favorite, but I am back up to speed now! 🙂

  2. Like you I have not been getting around to visit much lately. Not sure why…you would think being retired I would stay caught up. Love the look of your blog! I started with Blogger but once I found WP there was no going back. I think you will find it user-friendly though there are the occasional snags that pop up. As for the 35 pounds you lost, I found most of them.:(

    1. I have trouble staying caught up with everything too Patricia, I think I operate in a slower gear now. 😊

I’m glad you like the look here, I tried out a bunch if formats to find one I was happy with. More to add, but it’s a start.

I am going to try hard to keep that weight off, my heart will thank me. Lots more needs to go, but I am lacking in motivation.

  3. Love your new place — very, VERY professional looking!

I love to read anything you have to say, darlin. I surely uunderstand the slow start to the new year. Write now, write later, all of your fans will be right here waiting for you..

So happy for your weight loss, I know all too well the struggle it normally is.

    Love you much my friend!

    XxOo

  4. What a beautiful list, Josie. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I always enjoy your photos of your feline friends on Facebook. I didn’t realise you had a new blog, it looks great!

  5. Thank you Jo! We definitely share a love for furkids and I know how much you are missing your Charlie.

The new year seemed like the perfect time for the blog move I’ve been contemplating for months now. So far I am really happy with WordPress.

  6. Guess I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has been away. I’d love to get back into this and love that it’s still going on. Just not sure if it will happen. We’ll see what the days ahead bring.

  7. Oficial insider. Haha, I love that.

Online dating has been the easiest way for me to meet someone, as I struggle to do it in more organic ways. It is difficult to make meaningful eye contact with another person, from across a crowded room, when you can’t see.

I know exactly what you are saying about Facebook too. Bittersweet resource.

No worries about being less plugged in to all of the blogging world. It’s hard to sustain, to be everywhere all the time, every week, for weeks and months and more, on end.

You took on this wild TToT responsibility and I am grateful for that.

I wish you luck with this transfer of your blog.

  8. I smiled in acknowledging how well online dating would suit you, what I like about it for everyone is that you get to know the inside of the person first and so much better than you might with casual dinner/movie dates. Papa Bear and I spent endless hours online and on the phone talking about the real things in life, so by the time I met him a few weeks later I already knew what kind of man he was and that we shared much in common. I believe that one day you’ll find just such a perfect partner for you too!

Every now and then I find that it’s good to take a break and reassess what is most important in life, how you want to spend your time and energy, and with who. I always come back refreshed and ready to tackle the world again. 🙂

  9. Happy birthday to your sister, happy anniversary to you, and congratulations on the weight loss! Prayer does work, and it’s nice to see social media used for good. I understand the desire to get back into blogging/reading/writing/commenting; I feel like I have not been as consistent with that as in the past, and I am trying to find the balance that works best for me. 🙂

    1. Thank you for all the nice thoughts! Balance is the key word in life, and especially with social media, blogging, and the Internet in general. It’s not easy to maintain, because we all wish we had more time to share with others online, which still maintaining healthy relationships with our family and friends and getting done what needs to be. I am learning to accept that there is no way I can read and comment on everything that everyone writes, but maybe I can work my way around the circuit to visit everyone on a regular basis.

  10. Wonderful list of thankfuls. That is fantastic that you lost so much weight in a year. I am thankful to you for rescuing more kitties. I wish everyone would help a little and then there would be no homeless pets.XO

    1. The weight loss came as a surprise to me, not by effort, much more that needs to go, but it was nice.

I agree, if we each just reached out to help one animal and one human, imagine how much better this world would be! ♥️
